4/27/2019 Rowd Warriors Spring Sprints Encinal Basin and Oakland Yacht Club in Alameda THE VENUES:

Race site:
Encinal Basin in Alameda is accessed through the Wind River office complex. It is off Atlantic Ave/500 Wind River Way. Once entering the parking lot follow the signs that say Public Parking. Drive towards the water.

Berths for swapping in/out between races:
Oakland Yacht Club, 1101 Pacific Marina (also off of Atlantic Ave). We will be using gate #2 to access the dock area. The gate is located between Marina Inn and Encinal Yacht Club. If coming by water, there are piling/dock piers with flags on them that are designated with “OYC” There will be two porta-potties located near the entrance to gate #2. Under NO circumstances are rowers to use either of the yacht clubs or Marina Village Inn bathroom facilities.

BASIC RULE FOR THIS VENUE:
Getting between the race site and Oakland Yacht Club will be necessary to use the San Francisco Bay Trail that is marked with “Public Shore” signs. This is about the same distance between the finish line at Alcatraz and Hyde St Pier. The main goal is not to use Wind River’s parking lot as a shortcut. Maps will be available at coxswains meeting.

THE SCHEDULE:
7:30 AM Coxswains and officials meeting at Encinal Basin (location above)
9:00 Men’s start
9:45 Mixed start (approximate)
10:45 Women’s start (approximate)
Afterwards: Lunch at Dragon Rouge Restaurant, 2337 Blanding Ave, Alameda, CA

RACE COURSE and FORMAT:
The race course is approximately 2 minutes long starting along the back wall of Encinal Basin. This is a double elimination event meaning that once a team loses twice it is eliminated. Race brackets will be handed out at the coxswain’s meeting.
.
5/4/2019 Coast Guard Challenge Embarcadero Cove, Oakland THE VENUE

Coast Guard Island
Alameda, California 94501

After Party at Alameda Yacht Club
1535 Buena Vista Ave
Alameda, CA 94501

THE RACE COURSE: The race is a head start on a line defined by an extension of the line of north/south guardrail in the parking lot at the South-East end of Coast Guard Island (CGI). Boats will start at about 120 second (2 minute) intervals. Boats may pass under the CGI causeway between any support spans, except for the openings closest to the shore at either end. The race will be clockwise around CGI (island stays to starboard), honoring all day marks (leaving them to starboard), and finishing at a line extended from and in line with the end of the East/west guardrail in the parking area at the South-East end of CGI (Corner of Credit Union Parking Lot)

The CRO will announce which boat is on deck and which boat is in the hole and will announce the first boat’s 2-minute warning but will not tell them when to “come up to the line” or when to start. Wherever possible and safe, the start for one boat is the 2-minute warning for the next. If a boat has not started within 4 minutes of its 2-minute warning, the CRO has the authority to put that boat at the end of the line up and give a 2-minute warning to the next boat in the lineup. Race time starts when the bow of the boat crosses the starting line and ends when the bow of the boat crosses the finish line.

Best timed start: There will be an award for the best-timed start of the day. This award will go to the coxswain whose start is closest to 2 minutes after their 2-minute warning (in most cases the 2-minute warning is the time that the boat in front of them starts). This award is for the day, not for the division; that is, there will be only one awardee. Coxswains who cross the starting line less than 2- minutes from their 2-minute warning are not eligible for this award. In event of a tie, the award goes
to the most recently qualified coxswain. If both coxswains were qualified on the same date,
youngest coxswain takes the prize.

THE SCHEDULE:

Race Format:
This will be a “one and done” timed race. Boats will be started and timed individually.

The standing “t” start will be from near the end of the MHPYC dock. Boats will be held bow to the dock by a race official until the start horn is sounded. When the horn is sounded, the clock starts, the boat may then proceed onto the race course.

There are two turn marks on the course. Boats must keep the marks to starboard. If a boat touches any mark with the hull, they will be disqualified. An incidental touch of a turn mark with the oars carries no penalty, however, should a boat cause any mark to be significantly moved, damaged or dislodged, they will be disqualified.

The finish line will be approximately parallel to pier 50 from the RO’s position on the MHPYC patio and a floating “target”. When the boat has passed the finish line the finish horn is sounded and the clock stops.

Each boat will be provided two “harpoons”. Prior to crossing the finish line bow hooks on the race boat may attempt a throw at the “target float” at the finish line. Teams will be awarded a 5 second reduction from their time for each successful toss through the target. There is no penalty for a missed throw. Touching the target float with boat hull or oars will result in disqualification.

Much of the race course is in a shallow area with channels (4.5 feet deep at 0 tide). The shortest route may not be the fastest route. Stay to the SOUTH side (San Leandro/airport side) of the red channel markers. You will be DISQUALIFIED if you do not stay to the south side of the red channel markers. You may also get stuck in the MUCK if you veer away from the channels. Due to the relatively narrow channels, all boats that have finished racing must wait for all other racing boats to finish before rowing back in the channels.
