Remember this is also a fundraiser for BAWRA, the more people come and buy raffle tickets, the better for BAWRA :-)
This year the venue is the Mariposa.
* Program:
Beginning: 5PM Dinner: 6PM Lane Draw: 7PM Raffle: 7:30PM Band: 8 PM End: 1AM
* Volunteers:
We need help with the Galley, and also a few people who can help with some of the cleanup after the party. Please email me if you want to help out (ehislen@gmail.com).
* Raffle:
Fewer, better items raise more funds than many inexpensive items. Usually each club brings a couple items. Try to avoid having too many individual items: group them together if you can (e.g. wine bottles), otherwise the raffle will last too long.
Here are a few examples from last year, to give you an idea of what was successful (the more tickets counted the better...) 2 x City Light cruise ----- 13 beer ---------------------- 5 toys ---------------------- 1 bag loaded with goodies --- 35 wine ---------------------- 5 to 30 (depending on wine) gift basket --------------- 26 binoculars ---------------- 22 4 pies -------------------- 50 baklava ------------------- 15 giants tickets club box --- 27 bag + club sweatshirt ----- 3

COXSWAIN’S MEETING AT 7:30 AM. Same as last year, in the Wind River parking lot. 500 Wind River Way off Atlantic in Alameda. Once in the parking lot drive towards the water. All coxswains must attend as round and heat pairings will be distributed.
Race order is Men, Women and Mixed. Men’s division race will start at 8:30. Women’s race will start after the completion of the men’s division – approximately ½ hour after the men’s division
Berthing: Teams will be able to swap out at the Fortman Marina (1535 Buena Vista Ave by land) in Berths E13, E15, E17, E19, E21, E23 and E26. Keys will be distributed to at the coxswains’ meeting. (As info, they’re still missing a key from last year’s race) Please have a designated person return the keys. The Fortman Marina is walking distance from the race area by going along the walkway by the back wall.
The Course: This year’s course is similar to the previous years in that it’s a straight race without any turns. Due to the race format it will be somewhat shorter than the “old” Red Eagle Regatta. If you’re familiar with Alaska Packer Cove and the adjacent container storage yard, the start will be near the construction tire nearest the back wall. The finish will be at the double gate that has a marker board. This makes the race approximately 30 seconds shorter than the original course or about 95 seconds or 50 strokes per race. If allowable, we intend to have a finish line across the water with the boats going underneath to accurately determine the finishes.
The Races: This is a round robin race format, meaning every team will race each team once. Which on a 6 team division there will be 5 rounds of 3 two team races per round (15 races/heats) to determine the winner. Scoring for each heat will be 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss. Team with the Highest point total after all the rounds wins. Generally speaking, there will be 2 boat racing per heat. Although if there is an odd number of teams in a division this will change. Before going into details about ties and heat formats, I need to know who will be racing in each division by team. Please respond if your team will be participating so I can seed the races. Due to the complexities of the round and heat pairings, if your team shows up unannounced you will not be able to participate. Conversely, if you say you’re coming and can’t I need to know by this Friday, May 14th. In order to keep the races moving on a somewhat regular pace, all boats will be staged against the back wall prior to the start. Each team will be called up in the order of that particular round. After the preceding heat has been finished and recorded, the next heat will be called forward to the line. If you are not there for your heat, you’ll be assessed a minus 1 point for that round. There are no practice starts allowed in the staging area. After all the heats have been run and recorded for that particular round, all of the boats will again go back against the wall and the next round of heats will continue. I don’t anticipate more than 10 minutes between each round of races. This will be under the CRO’s discretion and the teams will be ordered back to the wall staging area accordingly.
Safety Equipment & Boat weights: The usual safety equipment is required (VHFs, life jackets, etc; ) and minimum boat weight. Emergency numbers and directions will be on the back of the race rounds/heats pairings that will be distributed to the coxswains at the morning meeting. Boat numbers will be required.
All participants must have BAWRA waivers signed with the CRO notified of any medical conditions.
The after race festivities will take place in the Wind River parking area. This will be a tailgate type event where we will supply burritos, beer and water. You supply your chairs, tables, umbrellas and anything else you might need.
Race fee will be $175 per team/division. Please make your checks out to Tom Andrich. Medals to division teams finishing in the top 3. Pins for all participants
Remember to bring perpetual trophies and boat numbers. |

Fortman Marina, Alameda |
7:30 cox mtg 8:30 co-ed 9:30 men 10:30 women
ITC Schedule Mixed and KB's to Fortman at 0730 Men and Women arrive one hour before your race.
Race fee of $50 per team.
cox mtg at wind river parking lot in Alameda - once entering parking lot make first right & follow the lane to the water/start line area. see google maps for directions to Wind River Company.
By land- Fortman Marina is accessible either by Wind River lot or 15315 Buena Vista
By water- It's on the South side of the race site. We've been assigned 6 berths on "E" dock.
The race format however, is being changed. In previous years I've heard complaints about the seeding of the heats. For example, two competitive teams going head-to-head in the first round with the loser forced into the grueling "loser" brackets. Then there was last year where there was confusion with the sequencing of the heats that put one team at a disadvantage and most likely changed the outcome of the race.
That said, this year's race will be a timed race and feature a port turn. The race course is about 4 minutes long and boats will run in pairs with the best time winning the division. The turn will be somewhere near last year's finish line and the new finish line will be about halfway back to the start. The race will be called "One and Done"
Also, we are adding a new level of competition to this year's race. Here's how it works. For each club that enters a team from each division, there will be an opportunity to win a $150 prize. The club with the lowest combined time for all three divisions wins. The hosting team is not eligible to win.
The race site is at the same location but the switch outs will be moved to Fortman Marina which is located on the other side of the stacked containers.

Mendocino Big River Fun Paddle |
Mendocino |
Ahoy rowers,
Teams used to gather for a week-end in Tahoe after the spring season to have a "fun row" on the lake. A lot of rowers miss it, and it has been proposed to find a similar event for BAWRA to mark the end of the spring season.
So this year BAWRA is proposing to meet on Mendocino's Big River on the week-end of June 27th. There we can rent big outriggers (very interesting boats handcrafted by a local artisan) to paddle up this beautiful river in the middle of the redwoods, or we can simply relax by the beach. There are tons of things to do in the area to fill your weekend (biking, hiking, cave kayaking, tide pools, skunk train, eating, drinking...).
This is the web site of the canoe rental place which has a few pictures and explanations:
http://www.catchacanoe.com/
The idea would be to paddle up the river (one can technically go all way up to 8 miles inland) and back on Saturday, and have a evening party/dinner on the beach afterwards. No race, no trophy, it's just easy paddling in gentle water with no prior experience required. It is possible to rent bikes from the same place, and several bike trails are available.
Regarding lodging, you're on your own: Fort Bragg 5 minutes away has lots of motels, and there are also camp sites nearby.
Please let me know asap if you are coming, and if so if you plan on paddling or not, so that I can make all the arrangements with the canoe rental place.
Thanks,
Emmanuel.

Berkeley Marina, Berkeley |
Whaleboat Races and Viking Games ---------------------------------------------- 2009 has brought some changes for the Vikings in preparing the event. We have had to acquire a special event permit from the City of Berkeley for STP. ***We have had to assert on the application that no alcohol will be served or provided at the event.*** Our liquid refreshment will be limited to sodas and water. Of course, the barbecue and the games continue. Also, we have had to post a cleaning/damage fee so plan on being good little Vikings and clean up after you've finished pillaging.
For those launching your boats, as part of the new reality, we will have to pay launch fees. The Vikings will pay whatever the charge is- a $15.00 savings to you. We will be given passes/permits for your vehicle dash. Please see me to get your launch permit.
The Marina is undergoing major renovations. This will actually work in our favor. The harbormaster is allowing us to reserve one of the two launch ramps for our exclusive use. Please launch from the east (hill) side ramp only- if there are power boats waiting to use a ramp. If you do use the bay side ramp, do not tie up within it but move to the outside of our dedicated ramp. There will be a lot more room for swapping out crews during the race!
We are expecting the Bjornstad Vikings. I think you already should have gotten the word. They will be in authentic Viking gear, have a tent or two with relics on display and have a 15 minute presentation on Viking combat! It sounds exciting!
We will still have our games. In the interest of timeliness, we have eliminated the tug'o war, and there will be no practicing with the cabers or stones once the games begin. Also, we plan to limit the caber and stone toss events to two different members of each crew. (Seems like most practice efforts were better than the official toss anyway). We will be checking your entry form so crews will not be able to slip in ringers. We will be working around our Bjornstad guests so things will have to be flexible. -------------------------------------------- RACE LOGISTICS
Boat races start at 9:00 am at the Berkeley Marina. Games will follow at Cesar Chavez Park. Also, this year check out the Bjornstad Vikings!
The Schedule 0815 Registration begins (please have forms prepared) 0830 Coxswains and Officials Meeting 0900 Women’s start 1000 Mixed start 1045 Men’s start 1130 Picnic 1215 Games 1300 Awards Schedule subject to change at the discretion of the Race Officials
The Venue As in past years, we will be racing from the Berkeley Marina. Boats will be docked at the “B” Dock, which is on the North side of the Marina. The race will be held on the North side of the North breakwater, in order to maximize viewing and safety. The course will be similar to previous years (only longer). BAWRA Rules of Racing apply. Picnic games & Bjornstad Vikings afterwards at the top of the hill.
Entry Fee $175 includes soda and water, participant keepsakes and team awards. The perpetual trophy to the overall winner of the Viking games will be collected and re-presented. Make checks payable to North Bay Vikings and bring to registration. A$5.00 food donation for non-rowers and guests is suggested.
Marina etiquette: Many boats navigate in and out of the Marina, through the breakwaters all day long, so please be on the lookout. Be sure to row through the finish line to give room for boats trailing you to finish cleanly.
Insurance/Waivers All participants in the boats and competing in the games must have a current BAWRA waiver on file with BAWRA. Money/waivers will be collected at the coxswain meeting.
The Race The course will be laid to the north side of the north breakwater in a “W” pattern. Current BAWRA “Rules of Racing” will be in effect and will be used by the jury to oversee the race and in resolving any protest.
Safety Estuary coxswain certification required and all coxswains must have a working VHF for communications. Please assure that all boats and teams are equipped in accordance with the requirements specified in Attachment I.
Age Restrictions Participants under the age of 18 must be reviewed and approved by the CRO. Participants under the age of 14 are not allowed.
Minimum Racing Weight The minimum racing weight is 2,000 pounds. Ballast needed to meet the minimum racing weight must be distributed throughout the length of the boat.

Equipment Requirements for Whaleboats: BAWRA Safety Equipment (PFDs, First Aid Kit, sound device, towline/bridle and VHF radio), plus YOUR BOAT NUMBER and duct tape.
Docking and loading race crews: All boats will use Union Point Marina to change-out teams. SOMIRA will use the Union Point Marina pump-out dock. Iron Oars, Carl Larkin and Regina will use the south end of the marina. La Sirena and Joey will use the north end. If Razzle Dazzle will be rowed more than once, please change out at the north end of Union Point Marina. DO NOT prop open the marina gate under any circumstances.
Parking: Park in the parking lot on the south end of Union Point Park, NOT in the marina parking lot. Leave the marina parking lot for the residents! You can also park on Embarcadero north of Dennison.
Costumes: Optional. Start and Course: Head style start off High Street Bridge, north to proceed clockwise around Coast Guard Island, and finish off the Fishing Pier at Union Point Park. Teams are to warm up to High Street Bridge along the Alameda side of the channel. Once crossed under the High Street Bridge you will be considered warmed up and ready to race. Racing teams must start on the Oakland side of High Street Bridge and pass under the Oakland side of Fruitvale Bridge. Take care to avoid the creek delta on the right just before the Fruitvale Bridge. Day markers around CGI must be to starboard and you may pass through any span of the Coast Guard Island causeway. •Starting order will be seeded from finishes in 2009 Coast Guard Challenge. If you are seeded high but don’t have as competitive team for this race, please move yourself down. We want to avoid overtaking, especially under the bridges or around Coast Guard Island. •Boats will be started one minute apart. Line yourselves up in order off the pier on the Oakland side and you will be called up from there. •BAWRA Rules of racing apply. Certification level: Estuary •USCG Navigation Rules apply during the race with respect to non-whaleboats. There may be sailboats and crew boats and anything else. You are responsible for responsible navigation. •No allowances will be made for interference from vessels that are not party to the race. We will do our best to start you safely. But we don’t know or control what’s down the course, and cannot make any allowances for interactions with vessels other than whaleboats. •You are out of sight of the Race Officials for most of the course. We expect you to observe the course requirements. Above all, SAFETY FIRST. Union Point Park is on the Oakland side of the Oakland Estuary, just south of Union Point Marina at 2311 Embarcadero. •If traveling South on I-880: Exit at 23rd Ave. (also marked at street level "Coast Guard Island") and take a sharp right onto Dennison. Turn left on Embarcadero at the first stop, (where Dennison turns into the causeway to Coast Guard Island). Union Point Park is about 50 yards on the right, past the marina entrance. •If traveling North on I-880: Exit onto 23rd Ave. and Turn left at E 11th St and left onto 23rd Ave (this is basically a u-turn). Once over the freeway, turn right at E 7th St, which turns into Embarcadero E. Once you see the water, the entrance to Union Point Park will be on your left.
Watching the race from locations other than Union Point Park: •Between the High Street and Fruitvale Bridges there are a couple of good places to watch the race. The map below shows the surface street route between the bridges, parking areas and parks. There is not a good place to watch at Park Street Bridge, other than the bridge itself. Drive carefully, it’s confusing. The freeway (I-880) works well south-bound, but not northbound. •Across from Coast Guard Island just off Embarcadero, there is a Shoreline Park. •If watching from the Coast Guard Island Causeway, please stay on the sidewalk! ..... |

SOMIRA 8th Annual Charity Row |
South Beach Harbor / Pier 40, San Francisco |
~50 miles from Sacramento's Discovery Park to Brannan Island.
Camping is available at Brannan Island Friday and Saturday nights for those who wish. SOMIRA also organizes a bbq dinner Saturday night as well as a breakfast Sunday morning.
The event itself is Saturday from around 5AM to 6PM (details TBD). Meeting in the morning at Brannan Island Camp site (you either camp there or get a motel close by Friday night, or you just drive there early Saturday)
Based on the number of rowers signed up, teams of 10 (coxswain+rowers+bowhook) are made who will relay each other all day long on legs from 2 to 5 miles.
Typically one rows 3 to 5 times in the day, with long breaks between each row (e.g. 3 or 4 rotating teams per boat).
Depending on the attendance there will be one or two boats.
A caravan of cars follows the boats from exchange point to exchange point carrying the resting rowers.
Here's the information we need from you:
Port or Starboard? How many rows? Shirt ($15): Yes or no? Tank (man or woman) or Tee? What size? Camping ($5 per night): No | Friday Night | Saturday night | Both ? Saturday Dinner ($15): Yes or No? chicken or steak? Sunday Breakfast ($7): Yes or No?
Once you know how much you owe, make a check payable to SOMIRA and send it to:
Vicki Brown 149 Mesa Verde, Vallejo, CA 94589
The deadline for signing up is July 20th. It's also the deadline for checks actually, so please send your payments to Vicki as soon as possible.
Remember this is a charity event, SOMIRA raises money from sponsors and puts their logos on the t-shirts they sell. Money goes to 2-3 organizations they select (different every year). One way to help out is to buy those t-shirts, I'm checking with them if they take donations, will keep you posted for those interested.

If Razzle Dazzle will be rowed more than once, please change out at the north end of Union Point Marina. DO NOT prop open the marina gate under any circumstances.

Start and Course: Head style start off High Street Bridge, north to proceed clockwise around Coast Guard Island, and finish off the Fishing Pier at Union Point Park. Teams should warm up to High Street Bridge along the Alameda side of the channel. Once you have crossed under the High Street Bridge you will be considered warmed up and ready to race. Racing teams must stay on the Oakland side of the channel between High Street and Park Street Bridges. This means staying to the Oakland side in both the open water and under the three bridges. Day markers around CGI must be to starboard and you may pass through any span of the Coast Guard Island causeway. • Starting order will be seeded from finishes in 2008 Coast Guard Challenge. • Boats will be started one minute apart. • BAWRA Rules of racing apply. • Certification level: Estuary • USCG Navigation Rules apply during the race with respect to non-whaleboats. • No allowances will be made for interference from vessels that are not party to the race. • You are out of sight of the Race Officials for most of the course. We expect you to observe the course requirements. Above all, SAFETY FIRST.
DO NOT PARK IN THE TENANT’S LOT OT UNION POINT MARINA – park in the parking lot just south of Union Point Park or along Embarcadero and Dennison.
Watching the race from locations other than Union Point Park: • Between the High Street and Fruitvale Bridges there are a couple of good places to watch the race. The map below shows the surface street route between the bridges, parking areas and parks. There is not a good place to watch at Park Street Bridge, other than the bridge itself. Drive carefully, it’s confusing. The freeway (I-880) works well south-bound, but not northbound. • Across from Coast Guard Island just off Embarcadero, there is a Shoreline Park. • If watching from the Coast Guard Island Causeway, please stay on the sidewalk!
